Keynote Lecture Fr13
Clinical Applications of the IRIS Registry
One of DOG’s top priorities is the establishment of a centralized, nationwide German register capturing all data on ophthalmological surgeries performed by hospitals and independent clinics/ophthalmologists. The American Academy of Ophthalmology already has such a registry. In his keynote lecture, Prof. Dr. George Williams will present the IRIS registry (Intelligent Research in Sight). Numerous German hospitals already document AMD treatments and cataract surgeries in their internal information systems. However, there exists no centralized database for this information. In walk-in clinics, which perform the vast variety of these procedures, it isn’t captured at all. In the United States, the American Academy of Ophthalmology has successfully established such a centralized database. All ophthalmologists can enter their relevant patient data into the system and access the full database. Thus, the IRIS registry not only provides insights on the occurrence and spread of diseases but also helps ensure and optimize the quality of treatments. The keynote lecture will touch on lessons to be learned from the American example as well as opportunities and challenges in establishing a central registry. Prof. Dr. George Williams (Livonia) is Director of the Beaumont Eye Institute in Royal Oak, Michigan (USA). He is the author of more than 250 articles and chapters on vitreoretinal diseases and surgery. In January 2018, he became designated President of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
